The Pope’s visit to the US earlier this year was followed very closely by the media and the American public with them showing a huge support for the pontiff, even filling Yankee Stadium for a mass service. However as his US visit drew to a close, the Pope was still able to take the time to celebrate his birthday, and at the White House no less.

Pope Benedict XVI visited the White House in April 17, which was also his 81st birthday, and was greeted with cheering from the thousands of excited onlookers gathered on the South lawn, not to mention traditional pomp and pageantry which greets guests to the White House. The celebrations and greetings were especially welcoming as Pope Benedict is only the second pope to ever visit the White House and the first in 29 years.

There were also 9,000 people invited to the ceremony inside the White House, making it the largest in the venue’s history. President Bush and his wife welcomed the Pope on the driveway, allowing them to greet him as he stepped from his limousine. Greeting the First Couple with a two-handed handshake, the Pope was greeted in return with a 21-gun salute, and the Marine Band playing the national anthem of the Holy See.

While the Pope was working with state visits on his birthday, I’m sure he was still able to enjoy a little peace and quiet and a time to celebrate this milestone of 81 years, while he was transported in his limousine.
